About the film.
“The Unknowing Teaching the Unwilling The Unnecessary”
Angel, a young gang member is approached and questioned by two police detectives about a recent gang altercation. During the interview he discovers that a younger gang member, his protege, has been murdered. Angel struggles with the realization that his actions caused his young friend’s death.
The police detectives help Angel realize that he has been manipulated by the older gang members and that like them, he has done the same to the younger murder victim. He is put in the position of ending the gang cycle by “giving up” his gang boss in exchange for his freedom or staying true to his “brothers” and taking the wrap for the murder.
In 2015, director Patricia Frontain’s innocent 14 year old son, named Patrick Boswell, was murdered when he was caught in gang gunfire. His perpetrator, only 20 years old at the time, will now spend his life in prison…falling even deeper into gang life. Her family’s life was shattered. The family life of the perpetrator was shattered. She believes that no one wins as a result of gang conflict.
When she realized that the perpetrator had been lured into a gang at just 13 years old, she began to wonder what his life could have been like had he not joined the gang. What made him join? Why did he not see the darkness in gang life? His young, pubescent, “know it all” mind did not see it because he was expertly manipulated by an older, trained gang member. He was taken advantage of and brainwashed into believing the gang “was his family and had his back.” Sure to the cycle of gangs, he was doing the same to younger boys.
Patricia does not want others to feel the pain of losing a child to gang violence. She wants to help eradicate the epidemic of gang gun violence, and the hope of this film is to serve as a catalyst.
